SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Symposium- North Central Weed Science Society
DESCRIPTION:From the North Central Weed Science Society: \nThis two day event will have a host of excellent plenary speakers as well as concurrent sessions totaling over 40 talks. See below and attached agenda for details\, but we have assembled a great mix of talks that includes research updates on control\, impacts to the ecosystem\, how land managers/companies are implementing control as well as outreach efforts. \nRegistration is available online at the NCWSS meeting website (http://ncwss.org/register-invasive-plants-symposium/) or if by mail by downloading and sending in a paper form (http://ncwss.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-Preregistration-Form-MIPN.pdf).  If interested you can register for the two day symposium ($150) or just one day ($100). Students have a discounted registration of $50 for the event. PLEASE REGISTER BY November 12th as prices increase by $50 after this date. \nPlenary speakers \no   Sara Kuebbing (Yale University) will discuss “Managing co-invaded forest ecosystems: lessons from research on co-occurring invasive plants” on Wednesday December 9th. \no   Basil Iannone (Purdue University) will summarize the “Patterns and drivers of forest plant invasions revealed from FIA data” on Wednesday December 9th. \no   Mike Jenkins (Purdue University) will discuss “When good plants go bad; mechanisms and effects of invasion.” On Thursday December 10th. \nConcurrent sessions will include a mixture of research\, management\, and outreach presentations within these sessions. \nControl sessions \no   Bush Honeysuckle Control (developing a plan\, management in Missouri\, aerial control\, basal bark applications\, mechanical methods) \no   Woody Invasive Species Control (Callery pear\, prescribe fire\, tree of heaven) \no   Invasive Plant Management in Grasslands (Canada thistle\, Johnsongrass\, old-word bluestem\, fen restoration) \no   Herbaceous Invasive Plant Management (purple loosestrife\, Japanese knotweed\, Japanese chaff-flower) \nBiology/ecology sessions \no   Prairie restoration (resisting invasion\, impact of invasives on establishment\, use of herbicides to assist establishment\, working with industry to register products for use) \no   Invasive Issues in Forests/Woodlands (Lessons learned from forest owners\, conserving urban woodlands\, garlic mustard biocontrol) \no   Biotic Interactions with Invasive Species (deer\, soil effects\, food web) \nOutreach/CWMA/Extension sessions \no   Invasives in urban areas (invsiave in cities\, importance of ornamental cultivars\, MIPN landscape alternatives) \no   Using technology (mapping with EddMaps/GLEDN\, IPC-Connect to link management information to observations\, Collector App\, an advanced option) \no   CWMA talks/updates
