SUMMARY:4th Annual Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) Native Plant Symposium
DESCRIPTION:From the event website: \nAs our natural resources and native habitats dwindle\, and the last of our available open spaces become developed\, it is incumbent upon landowners\, businesses\, municipalities\, and the public to collectively provide both the stewardship and the habitat that local native fauna require to improve biodiversity\, support local wildlife populations\, and keep the native ecosystems upon which we depend healthy and thriving. The production and incorporation of ecotypic (genetically) native plants into our regional landscape requires dedication to this progressive effort and many partners.  The 4th LINPI Native Plant Symposium\, “Flora for Fauna” brings together top plant\, restoration\, and wildlife professionals to share their vision\, leadership and expertise at this one day educational event\, to encourage the use and stimulate a commercial supply of ecotypic flora for the benefit of regional fauna.

SUMMARY:Workshop on the Science and Management of Ash Forests after Emerald Ash Borer
DESCRIPTION:From ashworkshop.org: \nThe emerald ash borer (EAB)\, first detected in 2002 in North America\, is rapidly spreading throughout the United States and Canada\, targeting all native ash species. The loss of ash will have important economic\, social\, and ecological impacts\, especially in areas where ash is the dominant canopy species\, such as wetlands and riparian areas. This workshop is offered to help prepare for and mitigate the anticipated challenges. \nJoin managers\, land owners\, and researchers for presentations\, field tours\, and posters aimed at the expected changes from the loss of ash and management options for resilient ecosystems. Topics will include silvicultural approaches\, options for species transition\, hydrologic changes\, plant community response\, biogeochemistry\, and more! \nVisit the workshop website for more information on the program\, registration\, and lodging. \n

SUMMARY:The Innovation Summit: Overcoming the Invasive Species Challenge
DESCRIPTION:From the Innovation Summit: \n“We are convening a major gathering of leading scientists\, innovators\, and entrepreneurs to solve seemingly intractable problems – problems that leave us vulnerable to the adverse impacts of invasive species. Invasive species are non-native organisms that adversely impact the environment\, economy\, infrastructure\, cultural resources and identity\, and/or human and animal health. They are estimated to cost the U. S. nearly $200 billion annually. Together\, we will celebrate new opportunities to prevent\, eradicate\, and control invasive species\, as well as identify the next big scientific and technical challenges to be overcome.” \nRegistration deadline is November 25th\, 2016.  View the event flyer for details. \nSponsored by the Smithsonian Institute\, National Invasive Species Council Secretariat\, Island Conservation\, Conservation X Labs\, and Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force \n  \n

SUMMARY:Plants on the Move: How Public Gardens Can Help Control Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:From the Morton Arboretum: \nHelp curb the spread of problem plants escaping from cultivation \nPublic gardens have special knowledge and perspectives on plants that escape cultivation and invade natural areas to disrupt ecosystems. Join with the staffs of public gardens of all sizes\, as well as others concerned with invasive plants\, and bring your expertise and on-the-ground experience to collaborate on ways to identify\, monitor\, and manage plants spreading beyond horticultural plantings. \nThe Morton Arboretum\, the Midwest Invasive Plant Network\, and the Ohio Invasive Plants Council will convene this summit on the scenic grounds of the Arboretum on Thursday\, November 10\, with a working group meeting following on Friday\, November 11. \nFind out more and register at the Morton Arboretum webpage.

SUMMARY:Cornell Plantations 2016 Fall Lecture Series: It's for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:From Cornell Plantations: \nLandscaping in our crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore. Many bird populations in the U.S. are in steep decline\, in part because our gardens and managed landscapes occupy more space than natural areas\, and we have not designed them with birds in mind. To save our feathered friends\, we cannot view plants simply as ornaments\, but must consider all of their roles when selecting them for our landscapes. Doug Tallamy\, the author of Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants\, will discuss what birds need form our landscapes to breed successfully\, and the important roles native plants play in maintaining food webs vital to birds’ survival. His talk will emphasize the benefits of designing landscapes with these roles in mind\, and explore the consequences of failing to do so.
