SUMMARY:CCE In-Service: Invasive Species Research Needs
DESCRIPTION:Researching the Research Needs: Identifying invasive species research priorities in New York State\nDescription:  Understanding the needs of invasive species managers is a critical requirement to establishing programs that meet these needs. An important and unique role that the New York Invasive Species Research Institute plays is that of collecting research needs from state partners.  In 2019\, we employed a new approach known as Group Concept Mapping (GCM) with the hope of 1) engaging a broader and more diverse audience in our call for research needs\, 2) increasing transparency and standardization of the research needs solicitation process\, and 3) introducing the opportunity for individuals to not only suggest ideas\, but also give feedback as far as the importance and feasibility of these ideas.  In this session of the Cornell Cooperative Extension virtual In-Service\, we present the results of this process\, including priorities according to importance and feasibility\, emergent topics and overarching themes\, as well as recommendations moving forward. \nPresenters:  Carrie Brown-Lima\, Director\, New York Invasive Species Research Institute\,  Bryan Dailey\, Technical Advisor\, New York Invasive Species Research Institute\,  Audrey Bowe\, Project Coordinator\, New York Invasive Species Research Institute \nFree registration for this session here.

SUMMARY:Implications of Climate Change for Invasive Species in the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:An overview of how climate change may influence the spread of invasive plants and animals that threaten northeastern ecosystems. Register here. \nWill climate change create conditions that let invasive species thrive? On October 21 at 7PM EDT\, Carrie Brown-Lima\, Director of the NY State Invasive Species Research Institute at Cornell University\, will provide insight on how climate change may influence the spread of invasive plants and animals that threaten northeastern ecosystems. Special attention will be given to management implications. \nInvasive species have pronounced negative impacts on ecosystems and economies\, and these impacts may be exacerbated by climate change. This presentation will review the current state of knowledge about how climate change influences invasive species. Brown-Lima will also describe the work of the Northeast Regional Invasive Species and Climate Change network that is bringing together researchers and practitioners to address this challenge. \nIn her role as Director of the NY State Invasive Species Research Institute\, Carrie Brown-Lima works closely with research scientists\, state and federal agencies\, the NY Invasive Species Council and Advisory Committee\, and regional stakeholders to promote innovation and improve the scientific basis of invasive species management.\nShe has over 20 years of experience working with natural resource conservation and management across ecosystems and borders. Prior to her position with the Research Institute\, Carrie spent 11 years promoting conservation strategies and partnerships in Brazil and throughout Latin America; this work included sustainable fisheries certifications\, agriculture and conservation\, and transboundary protected areas. \nThis event will include time for audience Q&A. Free and open to all\, registration is required to access the Zoom link. \n— \nThis event was sponsored in part by Sherret E.
