SUMMARY:4th Annual Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) Native Plant Symposium
DESCRIPTION:From the event website: \nAs our natural resources and native habitats dwindle\, and the last of our available open spaces become developed\, it is incumbent upon landowners\, businesses\, municipalities\, and the public to collectively provide both the stewardship and the habitat that local native fauna require to improve biodiversity\, support local wildlife populations\, and keep the native ecosystems upon which we depend healthy and thriving. The production and incorporation of ecotypic (genetically) native plants into our regional landscape requires dedication to this progressive effort and many partners.  The 4th LINPI Native Plant Symposium\, “Flora for Fauna” brings together top plant\, restoration\, and wildlife professionals to share their vision\, leadership and expertise at this one day educational event\, to encourage the use and stimulate a commercial supply of ecotypic flora for the benefit of regional fauna.

SUMMARY:Plants on the Move: How Public Gardens Can Help Control Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:From the Morton Arboretum: \nHelp curb the spread of problem plants escaping from cultivation \nPublic gardens have special knowledge and perspectives on plants that escape cultivation and invade natural areas to disrupt ecosystems. Join with the staffs of public gardens of all sizes\, as well as others concerned with invasive plants\, and bring your expertise and on-the-ground experience to collaborate on ways to identify\, monitor\, and manage plants spreading beyond horticultural plantings. \nThe Morton Arboretum\, the Midwest Invasive Plant Network\, and the Ohio Invasive Plants Council will convene this summit on the scenic grounds of the Arboretum on Thursday\, November 10\, with a working group meeting following on Friday\, November 11. \nFind out more and register at the Morton Arboretum webpage.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Interactions of deer and invasive plants: impacts on forest health
DESCRIPTION:From the ForestConnect Webinar Series:\nSubscribe to this series at: http://www2.dnr.cornell.edu/ext/forestconnect/web/subscribe.htm\n\nThere are significant impacts of deer and invasive plant species on forests and woodlands\, and these deer and plant impacts can interact. Join Dr. Bernd Blossey of the Cornell University Department of Natural Resources for this webinar. Bernd will introduce new metrics on how to assess deer damage and then discuss implementation of suburban deer management programs in the Ithaca area. These new approaches have resulted in substantial deer reductions in several towns and may function as a blueprint for other communities struggling to find their own process to deal with overabundant deer herds. \n\nInstructions for registering and attending this webinar: \n\nRead all these instructions.\nYou need a personal registration ID to join this month’s webinar.  There is unlimited space for participants\, the ID simply provides you the necessary access code.  Obtain your registration ID via:    https://cornell.webex.com/cornell/onstage/g.php?MTID=e9bc1ba3add2cf523230e030e48133fa7  If prompted for a password\, use C0rne11F0rest (the word “CornellForest” except the o = zero= 0 and L = the number 1; the numbers are in red font).\nOn the webpage where the above link takes you\, look for the option to “register” to receive your “registration id” number.  Note this page also includes the option to download resources related to this webinar (if available).\nWait for the email that contains your personal “registration id” number (a couple minutes at most usually).\nJoin the webinar via the “click here” button in this email to open into your default web browser (e.g.\, Internet Explorer or Firefox).  The “click here” button should open into the webinar\, or display a page indicating the webinar is not active.  If the webinar is not active\, that means the host isn’t connected and you will need to wait until the host connects.  If the page opens into a rather generic “Cisco WebEx” page then your browser may not be compatible with WebEx and you should copy and paste the full link found in the email (following “click here”) into an alternate web browser.  Using an alternate web browser usually solves most connection problems.\nTest the sound capacity of your computer by accessing a website with sound (e.g.\, video clip on a news website\, Youtube\, etc.).\nAs you enter the webinar\, you may be asked to test your media player.  If so\, you will need to complete that step.\nAs you enter the webinar\, you will be given the option to download software; you can bypass that step and enter the webinar directly.  I’m not aware of any problems that have arisen from downloading the software (which streamlines subsequent access\, but you should make this decision for yourself.)\n\n
