SUMMARY:Cornell Plantations 2016 Fall Lecture Series: It's for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:From Cornell Plantations: \nLandscaping in our crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore. Many bird populations in the U.S. are in steep decline\, in part because our gardens and managed landscapes occupy more space than natural areas\, and we have not designed them with birds in mind. To save our feathered friends\, we cannot view plants simply as ornaments\, but must consider all of their roles when selecting them for our landscapes. Doug Tallamy\, the author of Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants\, will discuss what birds need form our landscapes to breed successfully\, and the important roles native plants play in maintaining food webs vital to birds’ survival. His talk will emphasize the benefits of designing landscapes with these roles in mind\, and explore the consequences of failing to do so.

SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Species Walk
DESCRIPTION:From Cornell Plantations: \nWhat do garlic mustard\, European buckthorn\, shrub honeysuckles\, and pale swallow-wort have in common? They are non-native\, and all are considered invasive species and a threat to our native plants and natural areas. In recognition of New York Invasive Species Awareness Week\, join Plantations botanist Robert Wesley for this guided tour around Beebe Lake to learn about a variety of plants that are invasive in our area\, and what can be done to help slow their spread. \nPre-registration is required.  See the Cornell Plantations website to register. \n

SUMMARY:Invasive Species Summit: Challenges\, Strategies\, and Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:From The New York Botanical Garden:  “Invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity worldwide and are severely impacting our regional ecosystems. This Summit addresses the impacts of invasive species from a global to regional level: what is being done to manage them\, how restoring ecosystems can help\, and implications for the future. The morning plenary session features prominent speakers in the fields of invasion biology\, restoration ecology\, and not-for-profit land management. Afternoon concurrent sessions (registered separately) consist of short talks followed by moderated discussions.” \nThis event is co-presented with Lower Hudson PRISM.  For more information\, visit NYBG’s webpage.
