Description of invasive species management work:

I help coordinate hand pull & public education events related to water chestnut control. The District has a fleet of canoes and kayaks that can serve up to 12 individuals in conjunction with 3 large weed harvester boats. The majority of our work is conducted along the bays and tributaries leading into Lake Ontario. These include, Maxwell Bay, Sodus Bay, East Bay, Port Bay, as well as Red Creek (Wolcott, NY). Much of our work has been in partnership with FLPRISM/FLI out of Hobart & William Smith College as well as DEC Region 8 in the Lake Shore Marshes WMA.

Decades ago, I studied primary production by Myriophyllum spicatum in Wisconsin. In recent years I focused on the ecology and spread of Utricularia inflata in Adirondack Mountain lakes. My research program has now shifted to wetland and forest ecology with no specific focus on invasive species — but the impacts of beech bark disease, hemlock woolly adelgids, and emerald ash borers will figure into the forest ecological studies.

I am a biological technician for the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and I am responsible for managing invasive species on the approximately 10,000 acres of the refuge. Some of the managed species include common reed, swallow-wort, common buckthorn, Japanese stiltgrass, Japanese knotweed, and flowering rush among others.
